TEGA v2 News
Sydney, NSW, 06 Oct 2010
Today the TEGA v2 made its television debut on Australian Television, and in fact its world debut on TV. The show was "Mornings with Kerri-Anne" and the result was pretty good for a newcomer! Up against the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the Dell Streak and even the iPad too, itt came up nicelywith Stephen Fenech of "Daily Telegraph Connect Blog" stating:

|
Year of the Tablet | ||
![]() |
Year of the Tablet - PC&Tech Authority Tegatech TEGA v2 aims to battle it out with the HP Slate 500 for a slice of the burgeoning corporate Windows 7 tablet market. The TEGA v2 sports a 10.1 inch, 1024x600 capacitive multi-touch display and runs Windows 7 Home or Professional on an Intel Atom processor with 1GB/2GB of DDR3 RAM and a 32GB/64GB solid state drive. Australian-based Tegatech primarily targets corporate users and the TEGA v2 is available in a range of configurations with the option of 3G, WiMAX, WiBro, extra RAM and a larger hard drive, but not GPS. You can also buy the tablet with no operating system installed. The TEGA v2 comes with a stylus to compliment Windows 7's handwriting support. It also features USB ports, mini-VGA port, SIM card slot, SD card slot and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. Like the HP Slate 500, the TEGA v2 offers roughly iPad-esque dimensions with an aluminium back which gives it more of an iGadget look. The TEGA v2 is 1mm thinner than the Slate 500 and offers extra screen real estate, but the trade-off is that it's heavier at 870gm. Tegatech also works to compensate for Windows' shortcomings by pre-installing the Thinix Touch large icon interface - although it still falls short of slick iOS and Android touchscreen interfaces. This Windows 7 tablet has another impressive trick up its sleeve - the ability to dual-boot with Android 1.6 (with an upgrade to 2.2 expected). It's not pre-loaded; you need to download it from the Tegatech website and install it using UNetbootin. Unfortunately the Android distro was initially plagued with WiFi issues, though they have since been addressed in an update.

Yes, we were unlucky and got a faulty Tega V2 so Tegatech kindly shipped over a new one for us to play with. Work starts on that soon but in the meantime, what should we do with the faulty one? We hinted at a little nakedness to Tegatech and they agreed, so here it is.

Tegatech Tega V2 Quick Review

Australia-based TegaTech has launched a Windows 7 Tablet named Tega V2. Although we did not see too many slates operating in Windows 7 from some of the branded ones like Lenovo, HP, Compaq, etc. but now it's time to give a smile as Tegatech is getting a share in the touchscreen world by launching Tega v2.

We haven't seen many -- okay, any -- Windows 7 slates from major manufactures (i.e. HP, Lenovo, ASUS) like Steve Ballmer promised back in July, but one thing is for certain, smaller companies aren't just sitting around waiting for the other shoe, er slates to drop. We've already gotten our hands on products from the likes of CTL and Netbook Navigator, but Australian-based Tegatech also wants a piece of the large touchscreen pie with its 10.1-inch Tega v2. Like the others, the $799 Tega v2 is pretty much a netbook that's lost its keyboard -- it's got an Intel Atom N455 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 32GB SSD that boots Windows 7 Home Premium -- but the 0.5-inch / 1.9-pound slate sets itself apart by being one of the thinnest and lightest out there. Oh, and did we mention that it dual boots Android? So, is the Tega v2 the Win 7 tablet you've been waiting for -- assuming you have in fact been waiting for one? The iPad has set a new standard in the communication world. Its sales have gone high because it has covered a practical niche: quick using of a simple interface for connecting to the web. It has though some shortcomings, such as no embedded camera, no Adobe Flash capability, no multitasking and video at only 720p. That's why I was expecting a reaction, from companies adopting Microsoft platform, to manifacture a similar, but upgraded, gadget. read more

The Chipmaking Future for Tablet PCs Everywhere I turn lately, there are analysts forecasting an explosion in the sales of tablet PCs. Much like the iPhone and iPod before it, the iPad represents the first mainstream product in a growing market and it's not surprising that consumers like it – tablet PCs are great products and soon enough they'll find out how great as true iPad competitors emerge. read more

First Impressions: Tegatech TEGA v2 Tablet PC- Reviewed There's good news and not-as-good news for anyone who's been waiting for tablet enthusiast Hugo Ortega's company to launch its new Tega v2 Touch Tablet. The good news is that while the official launch was pushed back a few days to October 15th, it looks like the order page is already live. Comment: I'm very much looking forward to the lousy reviews that this device will get. I don't mean to indicate that this is a lousy device. I mean to indicate that people will try to shove this square peg up their round holes and then complain about the painful experience. Most technology reviewers now tend to review themselves in the context of a device rather than a device in the context of its usefulness (another reason why Brad is so different and so good). read more

TegaTech Tega v2 Windows 7/Android tablet gets hands-on treatment The Windows 7 tablets continue to trickle out, and after the mediocre showing of CTL's 2goPAD, can TegaTech's Tega v2 do any better? Cleaning Up Some Misconceptions About Booting Windows on the TEGA v2 Tablet/Slate As Microsoft and its partners get ready to hit the market with Windows-based tablets to compete with the iPad, my thoughts have turned to the all-important out-of-box experience (OOBE) that will create consumer's first impressions of such products. Tablets are different from PCs in the way they are perceived, probably due to the lack of a keyboard. The first impression is formed by taking it out of the box, turning it on and tapping away on the screen. Windows-based tablets fail miserably in this regard, while every mobile OS-based tablet I've tried does a great job. read more

The knowledgeable James Kendrick finds it difficult to boot into Windows on the TEGA v2 but overall likes the unit but hates Windows on a Tablet in general. Mobile OS vs. Windows 7: Mobile OOBE Wins Hugo Ortega, the man behind TegaTech has sent several gadget bloggers, including me, long term review units of his new TEGA v2 Tablet/Slate. Some got their units yesterday, some, like me, today. I've posted up some comparison shots with the iPad and will be posting more about the TEGA v2 over the weekend and into next week. All of that said, good friend and fellow blogger James Kendrick made some statements in a post, one of which is a mistake, and the others that are being completely misconstrued by some. Now that I've had a very little time to go hands on with the TEGA v2, I'd like to try and clear up whatever confusion surrounds those comments that run the risk of turning into FUD. read more

THERE is no shortage of tablet computers, with the Apple iPad, Dell Streak, Samsung Galaxy Tab and upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook vying for attention. ...But a new device from Tegatech, a company that has developed touchscreen and tablet PCs for nearly a decade, also deserves a share of the spotlight. The Tega v2 Touch Tablet has a 10.1-inch multi-touch, capacitive, full high-definition screen with three buttons -- Power, Home and Enter -- on the right side of the screen. Even though it is only 14mm thick, the Tega v2 has plenty of connections, including two USB ports, an SD card reader and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It also has a front-facing webcam. Users can choose a 16GB, 32GB or 64GB solid-state drive and there's a 3G version of this tablet. Normally tablets come with one operating system. Not so the Tega v2. This tablet ships with Windows 7 but you have the option to download and install Google's Android operating system v1.6. The Tega v2 can operate in dual-boot mode, which means you can choose either system at start-up. The Android software can be upgraded to versions 2.1 and 2.2 when available. Performance-wise, the Tega v2 impresses with a speedy Intel Atom N455 1.66Ghz processor and 1GB RAM: specifications that leave the iPad in the shade. Apps open quickly and having several open at once doesn't slow the device. The touchscreen adjusts to your viewpoint and is responsive enough for easy web browsing and scrolling using your finger. A generous on-screen keyboard appears near any text entry field, though fast typists may be frustrated by its lack of speed. Battery performance is reasonable but not impressive at five hours per charge. The battle of the tablets will intensify in coming months and the Tega v2 deserves a seat at the table beside bigger players.

Gentouch Latte - The Place of Budget Tablets Yesterday Augen – the company that had a run in with Google over the summer when their $150 Kmart tablet had unlicensed copies of the Google App Marketplace running on it – announced that they will be releasing a series of six Android Tablets with varying screen sizes. The tablets in question will be broken down into Latte and Espresso Series. The Latte Series will feature Android 2.2, 2 GB of flash memory, and HDMI out. The memory may be limited, but an SD slot supporting 16 GB of external storage offers some room for expansion. The part of real interest? The Latte will only cost $200 – a super budget option that severely undercuts the advances being made by some other devices. read more
